Triangle pulls on imagination

A glance at Google and the blogosphere shows that the Bermuda Triangle mystery is alive and well in the fevered minds of many.

In the spring of 1944, our squadron of PBY seaplanes, based at Jacksonville, Fla., was combing the Atlantic in search of German submarines. Our vectors changed every day, and sometimes we flew into the southern section of the famed Bermuda Triangle, also known as the Devil’s Triangle. Whenever that happened, we would pretend that all was lost, that we would never be seen again because we would just be the latest victims of the Atlantic Ocean’s dreaded black hole. The Triangle had been famed since 1921, when a Japanese vessel, the Raifuku Maru, went down with all hands after sending a puzzling radio message, “Danger Like Dagger Now, Come Quick.”

The Bermuda Triangle, which covers the Straits of Florida, the Bahamas and much of the Caribbean, is noted for a reputed string of naval and aviation disasters of supposedly mysterious origin. One of the more remarkable episodes, known as Flight 19, happened on Dec. 5, 1945, when a routine training flight of several Navy Avenger bombers flew into the Triangle and just disappeared, never to be seen or heard from again. And then a search and rescue Mariner seaplane, with a crew of 13, went out to look for the missing planes and was never seen or heard from again.

The ocean is the source of many enduring legends, from the lost city of Atlantis, supposedly sunk beneath the waves in ancient times, to the famed ghostlike sailing ship Marie Celeste, reportedly spotted for years at various locations in the Atlantic with no one aboard. The Bermuda Triangle and its many legends are right up there with the best of them. No one can count the thousands of hours that have been spent in efforts to deduce its mysteries. Would you be surprised to learn that one line of speculation involves space aliens and extraterrestrial goings-on? The paranormal is big stuff with Bermuda Triangle buffs.

Of course, the official organs of the United States and other seafaring nations pooh-pooh the whole idea that there is anything unusual about that particular stretch of the Atlantic Ocean. The U.S. Coast Guard and Lloyds of London insist that their records show nothing untoward.

But what the heck — dull folks like that probably don’t even believe in the Loch Ness monster. They have no imagination.

A glance at Google and the blogosphere shows that the Bermuda Triangle mystery is alive and well in the fevered minds of many. One of the more enduring explanations is that some colossal malfunction of the magnetic field messed up the directional compasses of various ships and planes, leading to disaster. But no scientific probe has ever found any evidence of that, more’s the pity.

How about this one from “CanadaAndreaslow” on some recent mishap in the Triangle: “Actually the Bermuda Triangle is an area where there’s lots of seismic activity! There’s a gas called methane peroxide which makes water so light that ships sink within seconds. This gas goes in the air as well and so it takes airplanes down. Methane gas is highly corrosive. It doesn’t occur all the time. Flying through the Bermuda Triangle is like taking the risk and walking over a highway with blind folds on … Not a great idea to do that. All airlines try to avoid the triangle.”

That last statement is not quite accurate. There are and have been for years regular flights to Bermuda, the Bahamas and many other points in the Caribbean.

Some accounts from the conspiracy front are plain wrong. When the tanker V.A. Fogg sank in 1972, one Triangle theorist reported that no bodies were found except that of the captain, who allegedly was found sitting at his desk, clutching a coffee cup. But the Coast Guard reported finding several bodies, none sitting at a desk.

Skeptical researchers have noted how mysteries and the paranormal fascinate certain people who are not interested in any dry airing of the facts. Those types are intrigued by the most preposterous hypotheses, including those of the supernatural. Followers of Edgar Cayce, the noted psychic, have linked the Triangle with the ancient legend of Atlantis, the city supposedly lost beneath the waves eons ago. A Steven Spielberg film, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” attributed the lost Flight 19 to alien hanky-panky. Others have speculated that the Triangle is a wormhole, a gap in space and time.

Of all the mysterious happenings in the Triangle, Flight 19 is the most puzzling to a former flier like me. Every one of those planes had a radio and a direction finder. I find it almost impossible to believe that none of them could figure out where he was.

Most plausible to me is that they all inadvertently plunged into an electrical storm so violent that none survived. But that is only speculation.

One thing is certain — the Bermuda Triangle will continue to feed all sorts of theories and hypotheses about lost mariners, pilots, ships and planes. It is right up there with Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster when it comes to endurance.

Miami, Puerto Rico and Bermuda are separately some of the most sought-after vacation spots in the world.

Sam Champion searches for the truth behind the centuries-old enigma.

More PhotosBut together, lines between them make up the approximate boundary of one of the most mysterious and deadly areas on the planet: the Bermuda Triangle.

Ever since Christopher Columbus sailed through the region in 1492, some weird, unexplained stuff has taken place over the Atlantic Ocean there.

Everything from bad weather to supernatural forces have been blamed for several high profile disappearances.

Here are just a few of the tales that deliver more questions than answers.

1945: Bomber Squad Disappears, So Do Rescuers

Although it was not the first unexplained occurrence in the area, many say that what happened to a bomber squadron in December 1945 sparked the legend of the Bermuda Triangle.

The five-plane squadron, Flight 19, with 27 men, set out on a training mission from their base in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and never returned.

A rescue mission of 13 men was sent to search for Flight 19, but those men, too, never returned.

1918: U.S. Battleship Goes Missing With 306 on Board

The USS Cyclops was a collier that operated between the East Coast and the Caribbean, servicing the Atlantic fleet for a time and then ran trans-Atlantic journeys until February 1918.

After fueling British ships in the south Atlantic in Brazilian waters, the ship embarked from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Feb. 16, 1918, came into Barbados in early March and then promptly disappeared completely.

The 306 crew and passengers were never heard from again and, while there are many theories, according to the Naval Historical Center, it “is one of the sea’s unsolved mysteries.”

1948: DC-3 Commercial Flight Vanishes

On Dec. 28, 1948, Capt. Robert Lindquist took off from San Juan with two crew members and 29 passengers heading for Miami.

When the plane was 50 miles away from Miami, Lindquist reportedly radioed the Miami airport for landing instructions. The airport’s reply was met with silence. The plane was never seen again.

According to an investigation by the Civil Aeronautics Board, the plane had electrical difficulties and low battery power. Those findings have not stopped many from blaming supernatural forces on the disappearance.

1976: Panamanian Ship Trades Cargo for Mystery

The Panamanian ship Sylvia L. Ossa was a cargo ship that was a regular near the mysterious waters of the Bermuda Triangle.

But in 1976, the Sylvia L. Ossa fell victim to the mysteries of the triangle when she and her 37-person crew disappeared without a trace.

The Coast Guard is reportedly still looking for clues to what happened to the 590-foot ship, pictured above.

1948: Star Tiger Drops Out of the Sky

On its way from England to Bermuda in January 1948, a Star Tiger passenger plane vanished with more than 30 people on board.

England’s Civial Air Ministry conducted an investigation and found that a ship, the SS Troubadour, reported seeing a low-flying plane about halfway between Bermuda and Delaware Bay. If that plane was the Star Tiger, it was horribly off course.

1963: Something Smells Funny With the Sulphur Queen’s Disappearance

The Sulphur Queen was a 523-foot tanker that was originally intended to carry oil, but was converted to carry sulphur.

On Feb. 3, 1963, the ship sent a radio report that placed it 230 miles southeast of New Orleans, La., according to a report by Time magazine. Then nothing.

There was no SOS and no warning of trouble. The ship simply disappeared.

Two weeks later, pieces of a raft, a life vest and a broken oar washed up on Florida beaches.

An investigation launched by the Coast Guard shortly after the disappearance concluded that the vessel was nowhere near seaworthy and likely caught fire at sea.

Such a conclusion was not far-fetched. According to the article, “once, the Queen actually sailed into a New Jersey port with fires smoldering, unloaded her cargo, and sailed off again — still burning.”

In 1970, Dr. Ray Brown, a naturopathic practitioner from Mesa, Arizona, went scuba diving with some friends near the Bari Islands in the Bahamas, close to a popular area known as the Tongue of the Ocean (This was depicted in the television show, “In Search Of…Atlantis,” originally made in 1979.

During one of his dives, Brown became separated from his friends and while searching for them he was startled when he came across a strange pyramid shape silhouetted against the aquamarine light. Upon investigating further, Brown was surprised by how smooth and mirror-like was the stone surface of the whole structure, with the joints between the individual blocks almost indiscernible. Swimming around the capstone, which Brown thought might have been lapis lazuli, he discovered an entrance and decided to explore inside. Passing along a narrow hallway, Brown finally came to a small rectangular room with a pyramid-shaped ceiling. He was totally amazed that this room contained no algae or coral growing on the inner walls. They were completely spotless! In addition, though Brown had brought no torch with him, he could nevertheless see everything in the room with his normal eyesight. The room was well lit, but no direct light source was visible. Brown’s attention was drawn to a brassy metallic rod three inches in diameter hanging down from the apex of the center of the room and at its end was attached a many-facetted red gem, which tapered to a point. Directly below this rod and gem, sitting in the middle of the room, was a stand of carved stone topped by a stone plate with scrolled ends. On the plate there was a pair of carved metal bronze-colored hands, life-sized, which appeared blackened and burnt, as if having been subjected to tremendous heat. Nestled in the hands, and situated four feet directly below the ceiling rod gem point, was a crystal sphere four-inches in diameter. Brown tried to loosen the ceiling rod and red gemstone but neither would move. Returning to the crystal sphere, he found, to his amazement, that it separated easily from the bronze hand holders. With the crystal sphere in his right hand he then made his way out of the pyramid. As he departed, Brown felt an unseen presence and heard a voice telling him never to return!

Fearing, rightly, that his unusual prize might be confiscated as salvage-treasure by the American Government, Dr. Brown did not reveal the existence of his strange crystal sphere, nor did he relate his experiences until 1975, when he exhibited his crystal for the first time at a psychic seminar in Phoenix.

Since that time, the crystal sphere has made only a very few public appearances but on each occasion people who have seen it have experienced strange phenomena directly associated with it.

Deep inside the crystal form, one gazes upon three pyramidal images, one in front of the other,in decreasing sizes. Some people who enter a deep meditative state of consciousness are able to discern a fourth pyramid, in the foreground of the other three.

Elizabeth Bacon, a New York psychic, claimed while in trance, that the crystal sphere had once belonged to Thoth, the Egyptian God who was responsible for burying a secret vault of knowledge in Giza, near the three great Pyramids. Perhaps the positions of the three pyramidal images in the crystal sphere hold the long-sought key to finding a fourth, as yet unfound, subterranean pyramid that will lead us to the Hall of Records? Who knows?

Looking at the crystal sphere from the side, the internal images dissolve into thousands of tiny fracture lines. Brown feels that these may prove to be electrical in nature, like some form of microscopic circuitry. From yet another angle, and under special conditions, many people have been able to see a large single human eye staring out serenely at them. Photographs of this eye have also been taken. I have not been able to find this photo anywhere. If you know anything about the photo of the eye drop me a line please.

Dr. Brown’s crystal sphere has been the source of a wide variety of paranormal and mysterious occurrences. People have felt breezes or winds blowing close to it. Both cold and warm layers surround it at various distances. Other witnesses have observed phantom lights, heard voices or felt strange tingling sensations surrounding it. A compass needle, when placed next to the crystal sphere, will spin counter-clockwise, then commence turning in the opposite direction when moved only inches away. Metals become temporarily magnetized when they come into close contact with the sphere.

There are even recorded instances where healing has taken place by merely touching the sphere.

We may only speculate as to why the crystal sphere was created and what part it once played within the underwater Bahamas pyramid discovered by Ray Brown.

U.S.S. CYCLOPS 1918, March 17 Bermuda Triangle

01/17/2009 · Leave a Comment

Source :Byerly.org

 - This is one of the classic Bermuda Triangle disappearances. Volumes have been written

about this vessel, and the more that come to light, the more confusing and mysterious it becomes. Two of her

sister ships the PROTEUS and the NEREUS disappeared on almost the same route in 1941. The loss of those

two ships was overshadowed by the onset of World War II. Click here for a list of the 21 officers and 285

enlisted men officially listed as dead on June 14th, 1918.The ironclad steamer KICKAPOO  carried the name

CYCLOPS from 15 June to 10 August 1869, then was renamed KEWAYDIN.The second Cyclops, a collier,

was launched 7 May 1910 by William Cramp and Sons, Philadelphia, Pa., and placed in service 7 November 1910,

          G. W. Worley, Master, Navy Auxiliary Service, in charge. Operating with the Naval Auxiliary Service, Atlantic Fleet,

the collier voyaged in the Baltic during May to July 1911 to supply 2d Division ships. Returning to Norfolk, she operated

on the east coast from Newport to the Caribbean servicing the fleet. During the troubled conditions in Mexico in 1914 and

1915, she coaled ships on patrol there and received the thanks of the State Department for cooperation in bringing refugees

          from Tampico to New Orleans.

With American entry into World War I, Cyclops was commissioned 1 May l917, Lieutenant Commander G. W. Worley in command.

She joined a convoy for St. Nazaire, France, in June 1917, returning to the east coast in July. Except for a voyage to Halifax,

Nova Scotia, she served along the east coast until 9 January 1918 when she was assigned to Naval Overseas Transportation Service.

She then sailed to Brazilian waters to fuel British ships in the south Atlantic, receiving the thanks of the State Department and

Commander-in-Chief, Pacific. She put to sea from Rio de Janiero 16 February 1918 and after touching at Barbados on 3 and 4 March,

was never heard from again. Her loss with all 306 crew and passengers, without a trace, is one of the sea’s unsolved mysteries.

Australia’s Bermuda Triangle, Part 2

01/12/2009 · Leave a Comment

Special report by Michael Cohen  m.cohen@allnewsweb.com

Yesterday All News Web published this article regarding two passenger airplanes that experienced equipment failure and faulty indications that resulted in loss of control of aircraft. One incident occurred in October 2008 the other in August 2005 and in both cases the airplanes plunged steeply. Both incidents occurred in almost the exact same spot over the mysterious town of Exmouth in Western Australia. The town happens to contain two highly restricted military bases as a well as the Learmonth Solar Observatory which is also used for planetary defense including ionosphere monitoring and meteor detection and tracking: A great cover for actual UFO related activity.

Within the solar observatory exists the barely acknowledged Learmonth Magnetic Observatory. To see how such observatories might fit into UFO monitoring take a look at this (specifically question 1) and this. The planetary defense program is known as ‘RDOS’  which stands for Rapidly Deployable Optical System and was established by S. Pete Worden of NASA’s Ames Research Centre who have as one of their stated goals the search for life outside earth. ‘Project Wormwood’ which specifically tracks moving objects near earth is part of this program.

In a remarkable turn of events it is now being widely reported that a third aircraft has experienced the same problems a week ago. On Saturday 27 December 2008 Qantas flight 71 with 277 passengers aboard going from Perth to Singapore was forced to turn back after its autopilot disconnected following faulty information being delivered to the crafts computers. The airplane in question was an Airbus A300-330 and the event took place about 350 nautical miles from Exmouth.

All News Web mentioned in its previous article that Geoff Thomas referred to the previous flights events as an ‘extra-ordinary’ co-incidence. He might now review that opinion. The Naval Communications Station Harold E Holt is notoriously secretive regarding its activities and reportedly denied any connection to the events. Even Less is known about the RAAF base Learmonth or the very secretive Learmonth Solar Observatory: tellingly managed by the US Air Force. Almost nothing is known of the NASA established Learmonth Magnetic Observatory, now also under US Air Force control.

With the admission by senior politician Malcolm Turnbull to an All News Web reporter that UFO related activity is ‘Above top secret’, and Australian Aviation’s prior reluctance to link the first two incidents we won’t be getting to the bottom of these events any time soon. The question must be asked: Is Exmouth Australia’s Area-51 and are UFO’s either being monitored from here or even using a landing base in the region as a stepping stone for exploring earth.

In the meanwhile airlines would be best advised to re-route and avoid Exmouth in Western Australia.

Australia’s Bermuda Triangle, Part 1

01/12/2009 · Leave a Comment

Special report by Michael Cohen m.cohen@allnewsweb.com

On the 7th of October 2008 the passengers on Qantas flight 72 from Singapore to Perth experienced something that may well haunt them for the rest of their lives. As the Airbus A330-303 was travelling over the isolated town of Exmouth in Western Australia the pilots received a faulty message and auto-pilot was automatically disengaged. The plane climbed 60m before pitching down and plunging 200m in a terrifying 20 seconds in an uncommanded manoeuvre. The pilots steadied the plane however a few minutes later the craft again plunged another 120m in 16 seconds.

Passengers were pinned to the ceiling and flung throughout the craft. There were 74 injuries, some relatively serious. The plane then made an emergency landing at the mysterious nearby Learmonth Airport.

Soon it was revealed that a similar event had taken place at almost the exact same spot three years prior.  Malaysia Airlines Flight 124, operated by a Boeing 777-2H6ER flying from Perth to Kuala Lumpur on 1 August 2005 also received faulty indications and the plane pitched upwards and stalled. Autopilot was disengaged and proved unusable for the remainder of the flight.

Geoff Thomas of Australian Aviation referred to the similarities of these two events as an ‘extraordinary co-incidence’. But are they?

Operating in the area are two rather secretive military bases. One of these:The Naval Communication Station Harold E. Holt has been already mentioned extensively in relation to the incidents. The Naval Communication Station was built in 1963 as a joint US-Australian initiative. The station’s purpose is to provide VLF (very low frequency) radio transmissions to submarines and ships of the US Navy and Royal Australian Navy operating in the Indian Ocean. The station consists of 13 radio towers. With a transmission power of 1000 kilowatts it is the southern hemisphere’s most powerful transmission station. The station was originally totally under US control but is now mainly under Australian control and curiously currently operated by Boeing Australia Ltd.

The Australian transport Safety Bureau, on investigating the incidents, has said that interference from the station might have caused the incident, although concluded that this is unlikely.

Less is known about the RAAF Base Learmonth near Exmouth. This is one of three bare bases in Australia and is only maintained by a small caretaker staff during peacetime. Access is restricted and it is difficult to ascertain what the place is currently being used for.

Of even more interest is the nearby Learmonth Solar Observatory and in particular the Learmonth Magnetic Observatory situated within the complex. Comprising a collection of white buildings, a suite of optical telescopes, parabolic dish antennae, it is also just outside Exmouth. The faculty exists purportedly for the prime purpose of monitoring the sun however other projects undertaken here according to Government websites include planetary defense, ionosphere (Basically the upper atmosphere) monitoring and meteor detection and tracking.

‘RDOS’ which stands for for Rapidly Deployable Optical System is the name given to all acitvities here involving planetary defense and the tracking of moving objects near the earth atmosphere. Pete Worden of NASA’s Ames Research Centre set this program up after travelling to Exmouth. Dr Clifford Rhoades and Major (Dr) Paul Bellaire of the US Air Force Office of Scientific Research helped with the program as well. ‘Project Wormwood’ which specifically tracks moving objects, purpotedly meteors, near earth’s atmosphere is part of this program.

The facility is jointly managed by the IPS Radio and Space Services which is part of the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, and the United States Air Force Weather Agency (AFWA). There are a total of 15 personnel employed on site performing observation, analysis, maintenance, secretarial and management functions. Observatory staff are drawn from IPS Radio & Space Services and consist of two space weather physicists and one administrative officer; as well as 11 personnel from AFWA providing analytical and maintenance support.

The RAAF Base Learmonth and The Learmonth Solar Observatory were not mentioned in any of the official investigations. The fact that Exmouth is a well-known UFO hotspot was also ignored, not surprisingly. This brings us to our final question, what is the true purpose of all these bases?

For starters, the Learmonth Solar Observatory and the magnetic observatory enclosed within it are stated as being used for planetary defense, ionosphere monitoring and meteor detection providing the perfect cover for the tracking of Alien UFO’s in space and within the upper layers of our atmosphere. Countless reports of UFO’s being detected within the ionosphere by the world’s space agencies have come to light. The fact that the facility is managed by the US Air Force is most interesting.

The Learmonth Magnetic Observatory might be the most mysterious facility of all of these. Hardly any information can be found out about it. Ufologists have routinely ignored magnetic observatories and their possible role in monitoring UFO’s but to get an idea of what role they might play have a look at this (Specifically question 1) and this, they may surprise! The Canadian government has admitted to using magnetic observatories to monitor UFO’s as part the highly classified ‘Project Magnet’.

Richard Hoagland, ex-NASA employee and space archaeologist media personality, released some spectacular NASA video footage that was shot from an American space shuttle mission in September 1991and accidently picked up by a ham radio operator. Subsequent to this intercept and its public distribution by the radio ham, NASA initially encrypted and then totally ceased further shuttle video transmissions. The video shows a bright UFO travelling near earth’s atmosphere and then two energy beams shooting from earth towards the craft making it turn 180 degrees and travel away from earth at incredible speed. One beam has been confirmed to have come from Exmouth. As mentioned above NASA set up the planetary defense program here. The US Air Force Office of Scientific Research who also played a part in the set up of this facility has been at the centre of UFO research for decades.

Numerous local farmers and residents have reported brightly coloured UFO’s in the area over the years and one well-known report in 1991 also involved multiple witnesses seeing beams being shot at these craft.

It should be also noted that Western Australia, especially the more northern area, is just about the most sparsely populated area on the planet yet at the same time serviced by a modern infastructure. Western Australia is politically stable, very wealthy and rich in minable resources making it an ideal location for top-secret high-tech operations.

Are the three stations at Exmouth scanning the skies for potential threats from space or are they merely part of a galactic traffic control system informing UFO’s wanting to get a closer look at humans and earth of whether they have official clearance to come down here? Is The Boeing Company using the base to familiarize itself with space travel protocol and procedure so as to one day expand into galactic travel?

Gadgetry from one or all of the bases seems to have interfered with the airplanes systems. Perhaps Boeing or Airbus have fitted their planes with experimental UFO reverse-engineered technology and this was picked up by the bases? Does an actual UFO base exist in the area which mistook the airplanes for alien craft resulting in procedures being activated to guide them down to a landing spot?

The recent surprise admittance to an All News Web reporter by senior Australian politician Malcolm Turnbull that anything to do with UFO’s down under is subject to ‘The highest classification and levels of secrecy’ means we won’t be getting any answers in the near future and we may never find out what really caused two airplanes to malfunction in the same way in the exact same spot.
